This Week in the Word

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

How easy it is to make the focus of our Christian lives a vain attempt to keep self-imposed laws and rules. But, we can never please God in this way because Christ has already fully satisfied the requirements of God by dying on the cross for our sins.

The Holy Spirit then has a crucial role in helping us to see Christ and empowering us to glorify Him. Self-empowered rule keeping is vastly different from Spirit empowered displaying Christ.

May each of us continue to cry out to the Holy Spirit for grace and mercy to see Christ and display Him.

Hoping in Christ,

Corporate Worship this coming Sunday

Celebrating the Lord’s Supper

This Sunday we have the joy of celebrating the Lord’s Supper. It is so easy to forget and neglect the most central aspect of our Christianity—the death of Christ for our sins. We need to be continually reminded of Christ’s death on our behalf so that we can refocus our hearts and lives on the cross of Christ. So, take some time before Sunday to prepare your heart and to talk with children as appropriate about what the Lord’s Supper is all about and why we celebrate it.

Worship in the Word: Romans 8:2-4

1. Why is where we “set our mind” so crucial for believers? (8:5)

2. How is the mind set on the flesh death? (8:6, 7) How is the mind set on the Spirit “life and peace”?

3. Why can the mind set on the flesh not “please God”? (8:8)
